Introduction
The Technological Centre in Biodiversity, Ecology and Environmental and Food Technology (BETA) at Fundació Universitaria Balmes aims to improve competitiveness and technological development in companies through R&D projects at regional, national and International level developing and transferring innovative and competitive technology with sustainable criteria to the food, waste and environment sectors. BETA is part of TECNIO, a network funded and supported by the Catalan Government for promoting differential technology, business innovation and excellence in Catalonia. BETA is currently participating in 30 competitive R&D&i projects funded by EU calls, Spanish Government and international entities. In addition, during the last 5 years, BETA has developed more than 150 research and technological transfer activities with different companies and public institutions
Roles
BETA has a strong experience and knowledge of the application of conventional and innovative technologies such as solid-liquid separation, centrifugation and membrane systems for the treatment and valorisation of livestock wastes, paying special attention to the recovery of nutrients and water, as well as the assessment of the agronomic value of the obtained products during the treatment of manure. In the projecte, we evaluated the potential of several technologies implemented in farms for the treatment of pig slurry and cow manure, focusing on the removal of antibiotics of veterinary origin and ARGs. In BioTreatED, BETA will provide its knowledge and expertise on separation technologies applied in the livestock sector.
